Bell’s Edition of Plays by William Shakespeare & John Home

£50.00

Product description

Bell’s Edition of Plays by William Shakespeare & John Home
The following individual plays bound together in this volume: Julius Caesar (1789), Hamlet (1788), Merchant of Venice (1788) by William Shakespeare; and Douglas, A Tragedy (1791) by John Home.
John Bell, London.
Hardback; 90 x 145 mm; raised bands on spine; Julius Caesar 108 pages; Hamlet 160 pages; Douglas, A Tragedy 88 pages; Merchant of Venice 120 pages; 476 pages in total. No dust jacket.
The book is in poor condition. The covers were probably originally half leather but they are now badly worn and scuffed with some cracking along the spine. Page ends tanned and tanning internally, and some grubbiness with a few open tears but without loss of text. The front endpapers have been annotated in ink with names and initials. There is cracking along the gutter in various places, at one point repaired by sellotape, and the front matter is loose. Small puncture marks along the gutters for a substantial part of the book.
Each individual play has a frontispiece of a well-known actor of the period in a character part: Mrs Ward in Portia; Mr Kemble in Hamlet; Mr Holman as Douglas; Mr Macklin in Shylock. The appeal of this volume is probably of more academic interest in that it presents texts of the plays of Shakespeare as they then were, for performance on the stage, and observations on the plays. In the case of Douglas it includes the names of the actors who took the parts at Drury Lane and Covent Garden.
