Published by Routledge, Warnes, & Routledge in 1859 in 4 Volumes. Illustrated in black and white. Half-leather binding with marbled boards.

The Life of Samuel Johnson by James Boswell was described as "the most famous single work of biographical art in the whole of literature" by Walter Jackson Bate. Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) was an English writer who was most well known for his work 'A Dictionary of the English Language' published in 1755. This biography gives an account of his studies and works as well as his correspondences with many eminent people in chronological order.

In fair to good condition. All four volumes show significant signs of rubbing wear to the covers. Volume I has 2cm split along the the spine strip. Some light yellowing and foxing to the pages. The first volume has some damage to the front hinge and the second volume has pencil marks. The bindings are sound and overall the set is in reasonable condition.
