Britannia: Volume the First or an illustration of the Kingdom of England and Dominion of Wales, etc, etc

£19.99

Product description

Britannia: Volume the First or an illustration of the Kingdom of England and Dominion of Wales, etc, etc
John Ogilby
Alexander Duckham & Co Ltd, 1939. Facsimile of 1675 edition.
Hardback; 315 x 250 mm; cloth boards with titles in gold and red on front cover, and on red cloth on spine; 100 plates in colour, unpaginated. No dust jacket.
The book is in good condition. The binding is sound. The covers are a little grubby with bumping to the ends of the spine and some wear on the corners. The cloth titles on the spine are starting to peel away at the edges though they are still firmly attached. The book is slightly bowed outwards. Page ends tanned, and tanning of the endpapers. The publisher’s label on the front paste-down endpaper has left a ghost image on the recto of the front free endpaper. On the reproduction of the original title page “(1675)” has been added in pencil. Slight crease bottom plates 97/98.
John Ogilby (1600 - 1676) was a Scottish translator, impresario, and cartographer. Best known for publishing the first British road atlas, he was also a successful translator, noted for publishing his work in handsome illustrated editions. The original road maps are beautifully reproduced in this facsimile edition.
