Undated C1860. These are two volumes bound in one; Birds Illustrated with Nearly 350 Engravings, Reptiles, Fishes, Insects, Worms, Crustaceans, Molluscs, Sea-Stars, Echinoderms, Corallines, Corals, and Animalcules Illustrated by Nearly Four Hundred Engravings.
Birds comprises 6 sections : Rapacious, perching, climbing, gallinaceous, wading, swimming birds, illustrated with nearly 350 engravings. Fascinating looking at the plates of some much rarer birds, if indeed they still exist today such as the whin-chat, the bee-eater, black-headed kingfisher, the Cassowary and not forgotteting the inimitable Dodo.
The illustrator (s) are not credited, but the etchings are beautiful.
The book has a green leather spine with gilt lettering and bands. The top spine is worn and has some damage with a tear at the top edge. The bottom edge of the spine is also worn. The covers are green cloth and they have wear on the corners. The text block edge is marbled. The binding is tight. There are occasional light speckles in the text.
A very lovely book in great condition for its age.
