Publisher: Published by the Author at his Indian Collection, No. 6, Waterloo Place, London, 2nd edition, 1848. 2 Volumes Octavo Hardback, Vol 1 (296 pages), Vol 2 (336 pages). Original embossed cloth boards with gilt illustration of a white man greeting a native american. Numerous illustrations in b&w. A rare and desirable 1848 2nd edition, London published copy that requires significant restoration. Volume 1 is missing spine cover with both boards detached (but present and in reasonable condition, if faded and with some shelf wear, with fair gilt titling and illustration). Volume 2 is missing spine cover and back board with front board detached (but present and in reasonable condition, if faded and with some shelf wear, with bright gilt titling and illustration). Internally, both volumes are in fair condition commensurate with age - still firmly bound with generally clean and bright text pages and illustrations. Light tanning throughout and a few foxing marks here and there. A few pencil markings in vol 2 and one or two in Vol 1 (which should be relatively easy to erase). A few corner creases here and there in vol 2. Page block edges are a little 'dusty' with age. Overall, no major faults internally. This 2 volume, 1848 2nd edition set, with many fascinating illustrations, is scarce in any condition and will make an ideal subject for a careful and sympathetic restoration. Given the current values of the few available examples in good condition (especially the rarer London published version which this is), such a restoration would be a highly worthwhile and satisfying project.
