Commentary on the Gospel of St John - 3 Volumes [Third Edition, 1899/90]

£45.00

Product description

Clark's Foreign Theology Library, Fourth Series. Godet on the Gospel of St John in 3 Volumes. With a Critical Introduction.

Published by T & T Clark, Edinburgh. Attractive dark blue half-leather binding, with marbled boards, end papers and page edges. 5 raised spine bands, gilt decoration and lettering.

Volume One published in 1899
Volume Two Undated
Volume Three published in 1900

Written by F Godet, translated from the last edition by M D Cusin and S Taylor.
Frédéric Louis Godet (1812-1900) was a Swiss Protestant theologian. Godet was the author of some of the most noteworthy commentaries of the time, which have been translated into many languages and are still in print, as well as numerous articles. His Commentary on the Gospel of John, which continues the line of interpretation of Christoph Ernst Luthardt, ranks as the most prominent of his works. Throughout his works, he defends the authenticity and reliability of the New Testament, and particularly the gospels, although he did not commit himself to the plenary inspiration of the Scriptures.

Worn on the extremities; particularly on the edges of the spine strip and corners. The front board of volume three is becoming detached (see photo 8). The pages are generally bright, clean and unmarked, although the end papers have a bit of foxing. The bindings are nicely tight.
