17 volumes published in Brussels by Peeters (Gaule, 1833), Wahlen (Isabel, 1835; Souvenirs d'Antony, 1835; Acte, 1838) and Meline (12 vols 1838-9) in small format 15 x 10 cms. Bound in 19th Century calf by W Jeffs, London (binder's ticket). With the coroneted and collared armorial crest of John George Lambton 1st Earl of Durham (1792 - 1840), displaying motto of the Order of the Bath, Earl's coronet and ram's head crest - stamp 2, University of Toronto Libraries.
"Dumas Oeuvres I - XVIII" on spine half title only, label missing in several cases but impression can generally be read. Vol XVIII lacks rear cover, Vol I has a few pages with small tears, otherwise sound and contents clean.
Rare in this format, early pirated editions of Dumas, taken from French serial publications and in some cases published in Belgium in book form before the French book editions. A parallel series of sixteen volumes of Belgian pirated editions of Hugo's works with the Lambton heraldic book stamp is in the Clements collection, National Art Library. A selection from the Lambton Castle Library was sold at Sotheby's on 8th February 1932.
