Elizabeth Barrett Browning

Product description

Elizabeth Barrett Browning

John H Ingram

Eminent Women Series

W H Allen & Co, London, 1889; 2nd edition.

Hardback; 130 x 190 mm; dark green boards with gold titles on spine and front cover; xii & 194 pages plus 44 pages and 2 unpaginated leaves of advertisements. No dust jacket.

The book is in good condition. The binding is sound and tight though the book is slightly cocked. Some bumping, especially to the ends of the spine, with a little wear along the joints and a few marks on the covers. Page end tanning. Verso of the front free endpaper marked in pencil “3/6”.

“No writer approaching the eminence of Elizabeth Barrett Browning has been so little written about. Hitherto, nothing even claiming to be a biography of her has been published in her native land, whilst her works, which reveal so much of her inner self, have only been attainable in costly editions. It would almost appear as if it had been desired to retard, rather than promote, the popularity of one of England's purest as well as greatest poets.... (S)ome past success in the paths of biography has encouraged me to place before the public what, with all its shortcomings, is the initial biography of Elizabeth Barrett Browning.
