Holy Bible

£50.00 Out Of Stock

Product description

It is almost a miracle that the entire biblical text can be contained in a volume measuring just 12 x 7 x 4 cm, but in 1844 this was achieved by using possibly the smallest typeface ever - legible by the very short-sighted, or the very long-sighted, but possibly less so by those with 'normal' vision. Our copy, however, is of interest as it was evidently used as a 'family' Bible from about 1864, with a number of marriages and (probably) births recorded in ink on the back page and inside the back cover, as well as other names inscribed on the front/title page and on a page which was perhaps pasted in some 40 years after its production.

The book is in a condition consistent with its age and probable use - the outer leather covers considerably worn and battered, and the elaborate gilt decoration almost completely faded away, as has the gilt edging of the pages. The metal clasp is still present, and doing its job, however. The front and back covers have at some point become detached and been neatly re-attached with black tape. The binding otherwise, however, is firm, and there appear to be no loose or missing pages. The text is clean.
