Horses. The Equidae or Genus Equus of Authors

£35.00

Product description

This is volume 12 of the Mammalia in the Naturalist’s Library.. It contains also a memoir of Gesner, the distinguished sixteenth century Swiss naturalist and polymath.
Lizard hardback half bound in leather. Five bands to spine cover with gilt lettering. Boards covered with patterned paper. There are two title pages. Both are dated 1841. The first mentions the editorship of Sir William Jardine and makes no mention of illustrations. The second claims that the book if “Illustrated by thirty five coloured plates with portrait and memoir of Gesner”. Neither seem entirely to relate to the test here present. Thus there are no colour illustrations although there is an index of the 35 promised in the second title page. Instead there are three line drawings in individual plates and some vignettes within the text. There is no frontispiece but this has probably been extirpated together with one of the end pages as the front hinge internally is displayed. There are a number of loose pages viz 2278/9: 329 30 and p351 and the rear end page. Page 229/30 is missing. The binding from page 263 onwards is very poor with individual pages being partially detached and the hinge displayed.
