In the Hour of Silence

£19.99

Product description

In the Hour of Silence
Alexander Smellie, MA
Andrew Melrose, London, 1899.
Hardback; 145 x 195 mm; red boards with gold titles on spine and front cover; decorative spine in gold; viii & 397 pages plus unpaginated advertisements; all edges gilt. No dust jacket.
The book is in good condition. The binding is generally sound. But there is cracking along the gutter at the front endpapers with the front free endpaper, fly title, and page vii/viii loose. Some fading of the spine with some wear along the joints particularly fraying at the top, and bumping at both ends. A few marks and wear on the covers. Tanning internally and some foxing. Some closed tears, creases, and a few dog ears.
Alexander Smellie (1857-1923) looked forward to the reunion of the evangelical Presbyterian denominations in Scotland and had cordial relations with Christians in other churches. As a writer he is best-known for his Men of the Covenants which has been translated into several languages.
In the Hour of Silence provides a daily meditation, one per page, throughout the year. It can be used as such but also may appeal to those with an interest in the history of Christianity, Christian thought in late Victorian times, etc, etc.
