Italy - A Selection of late 19th Century Photographs

£300.00 Out Of Stock

Product description

Italy - A Selection of late 19th Century Photographs

Fine red buckram boards of near-indestructible quality with lavish gold inlay. Spine with five raised bands in gilt with black edging, now rather worn. Front board emphatically stamped with the gold title "ITALY".

Red and grey marbled paste downs with lovely gold filigree edging.

This was the private album of one with a highly appreciative eye but there is no indication anywhere of an identity. pp83 unpaginated.

Dated 1878 ("gold medal" sticker inside front cover), this is largely an architectural trip around the Mediterranean (not entirely Italy), told through A4 sized post cards, engravings and cuttings taken from museum or gallery guides. The photography is superb - entirely in black and white and now fading to a gentle sepia.

Many of the illustrations have factory-printed titles or one-line descriptions, eg, "2714. Firenze - Galleria Uffizi - Ritratto di donna detta la flora" beneath a portrait of a Florentine lady of leisure showing off her finery. Close examination of this photograph reveals the engraved stamp of Giacomo Brogi - a well known photographer of Florence and Naples.

Other images bear neither printed description nor engravings, and instead have inscriptions penned by the owner.

The collection has a timeless feel to it: on one page there is an image of men fishing in the Tiber with a backdrop of the Basilica, followed by one of urban dereliction upon the Isola di S. Bartolomeo, taken before the abbey had its window arches knocked through.

This is a very heavy album - 3-4Kg.

Oxfam Bookshop Market Harborough

Oxfam is the UK's largest second hand bookseller. Oxfam bookshops offer a wider selection of books than most shops, from modern fiction and leisure interest to more specialist subjects, classics, and rare or collectable books. We also stock an attractive range of greetings cards and a good selection of stationery. Come and browse!

Could you help us by collecting donations from donors homes? Our shop receives many offers of generous donations that we have to turn down as we do not have volunteers able to collect. We would ask you to collect in your own car, at your convenience and reimburse your petrol costs. It might be a couple of times a month and would make a really big difference to our ability to make money.
