Internally the book is in decent condition commensurate with age, with firm binding and clean, clear pages.
Small booksellers label on front endpaper and inscription on reverse of ffep. Pages are lightly tanned commensurate with age. Spilt developing along front endpaper joint but binding not exposed and firmness not significantly affected. Ditto on rear endpaper but to a much lesser extent. Half title page has been neatly excised. Apart from a Life of Johnson by Lord Macaulay, there are lives of Milton, Dryden, Swift, Addison, Pope and Gray. Preface and notes by Matthew Arnold. A decent and presentable 1898 copy of an important and scholarly work with valuable preface and notes by Arnold.
