Manners and Customs of Mankind: Their Origins and Their Observance Throughout the World Today (in 3 Volumes)

£38.00

Product description

Published in the early 1930s (undated) by Amalgamated Press in three volumes. Hardback. Brown cloth board covers with gilt lettering on the spine and embossed pattern on front and back. Some foxing to end papers and age-toning of inside pages. Binding is still tight. In good condition overall. Illustrated with 1800 black and white photographs and numerous colour plates.

This fascinating reference work shows the manners and customs of people across the world from a time between the two World Wars. Inevitably it oozes all the prejudices you would expect from that era - Eurocentric superiority, the exoticism of other (inferior) cultures, a fascination with 'primitive' ways of life, including polyandry, nudity and other 'savage' practices. However, if you are able to ignore its colonial assumptions, these volumes give a picture of just how diverse and varied societies across the world were at a time that is still just within living memory.

A 'must buy' for any student of anthropology or social history.

NB additional postage charge due to its weight.
