£19.99 Out Of Stock

Product description

Modelling and Sculpture: A Full Account of the Various Methods and Processes Employed in these Arts
Albert Toft, Hon ARCA, MSBS
Seeley and Co Limited, London, 1911.
Hardback; 150 x 200 mm; cream boards with titles and pictorial foliage design in red on spine and front cover; xvi & 348 pages with unpaginated advertisements for other books at back plus a Catalogue of Books on Art, etc, etc published by Seeley & Co Ltd, 16 pages. No dust jacket. With 118 illustrations and diagrams.
The book is in fair condition. The binding is generally sound but there is cracking along the gutter at pages 272/273 and 288/289. Page 9/10 of the Catalogue is loose but still attached. The edges of some of the leaves of the catalogue have been inexpertly cut leaving ragged fore edges and closed tears. The covers are grubby, especially the spine which is also worn. Both ends of the spine are bumped, and there is some bumping and wear to the edges of the covers. There are white marks on the spine, the top of the back cover, and inside the covers at the top. The top edges of circa pages 49 to 258 are similarly affected, cause unknown. The endpapers are tanned as are the edges of the pages either side of circa pages 49 to 258. This may reflect a change in the sort of paper used. There is damage where part of the frontispiece had become stuck to the title page and then separated. A few grubby marks here and there.
Albert Toft (1862 – 1949) was an English sculptor. His brother was the landscape artist Joseph Alfonso Toft. He created monuments to Queen Victoria for Leamington Spa, Nottingham, and South Shields, and to Edward VII in Birmingham and Warwick. He designed the coronation medal of George V and Queen Mary (1911). He made a series of war memorials, starting with the South African War Memorial in Cardiff (1910), and then many after the First World War, including the Royal Fusiliers War Memorial in London (1922), and four statues for the Birmingham Hall of Memory (1923-24).
Albert Toft created this manual to offer students every practical detail necessary for a complete knowledge of modelling and sculpture. Both professionals and amateurs will find Toft's experienced guidance a valuable help in surmounting difficulties and avoiding errors.
