Cover, in faded blue cloth boards with gilt titling to spine, is in fair to good condition commensurate with age with fading to spine, light bumping to corners and spine extremities and a few marks here and there. Internally the book is in sound, reasonably firm and generally clean condition for its age with clear text pages and illustrations and no tears, creases or significant marks except for foxing on endpapers, frontispiece tissue guard and on first few and last few pages.. Neat pen inscription on ffep dated Oct 1st 1896. Light tanning to pages commensurate with age. Rear hinge slightly weakened and also binding slightly weakened at foot of title page and at page 1. An interesting portrait of Gladstone and Mrs Gladstone in his retirement with lovely b & w full page illustrations by a young Arthur Rackham (still in his twenties in 1896, this was one of his earliest book illustration commissions, his first being in 1894) and a number of fascinating photographs, some full page. A rare and unusual book for the Rackham collector!
