Lardner was an Irish populiser of scientific matters in the first half of Victoria’s reign. He was the author of the Cabinet Library and a very large number of other books. He was a member of the Royal Society and well regarded although he was bested in a public row with Brunel and sacrificed popularity when he ran off with another’s wife.

Walton and Maberly hardback with brown cloth covered boards. There is an embossed pattern on front and back, and a gilt design and lettering on the front. The spine cover is somewhat soiled with the external hinge worn . Spine cover worn at top and bottom and the corners of the boards are worn and bent. One leaf of the front end paper is missing. Binding good. Multiple engraved illustrations. There is scattered generalised foxing of the text block. No marks.
