Nelsons' Hand-Book to The Isle of Wight: its History, Topography, and Antiquities

£50.00

Product description

With notes upon its principal seats, churches, manorial houses, legendary and poetical associations, geology, and picturesque localities. Especially adapted to the wants of the tourist and excursionist. New and Revised edition 1873. Green cloth covered card covers blind-stamped around the margins, gilt titles on the front and spine. The spine is darkened. Cloth has edge wear with bumping and short tears at the top and base of the spine. Small ink blot on both the front and back covers plus some superficial surface soiling. There is a partial crack to the front hinge at the pastedown. There are a few foxing spots on the first few and last few pages and on the reverse of the pull-out map opposite the Introduction. A previous owner has stuck some (4) relevant newspaper cuttings dated between 1910 and 1917 into the text but they have been added without obscuring any of the text or illustrations. Illustrated with a colour map of the island and a number of full page plates.

Oxfam Bookshop Lymington

Lymington is on the South coast, bordering on the New Forest National Park which was created as a Royal Forest in 1079 by William the Conqueror, and first recorded as 'Nova Foresta' in the Doomsday Book in 1086. Our Oxfam Shop at 73, The High Street is in a lovely Georgian building, the tallest in Lymington. The elegant Georgian buildings lining the wide main street were built mostly for merchants in the local salt trade. The famous Saturday market brings the town to life with its variety of stalls. The area is renowned for outdoor pursuits, including camping, sailing, windsurfing, and surfing, as well as forest walks and horse riding.
