Nolan's History Of The Russian War (8 illustrated volumes)

£500.00

Product description

Beautifully bound in red cloth embossed with gilt, Nolan's History Of The Russian War published in eight volumes from 1856/7 is an extraordinary work. E. H. Nolan describes the Crimean War through a series of images and a comprehensive written history. The Crimean War spanned October 1853 to February 1856 and involved Russia against an alliance of France, Britain, the Ottoman Empire and Sardinia. It was one of the first conflicts to use modern technologies like telegraphs, the railways, and explosive shells. Russia's geography, population, and government are analysed as well as the military's strength and finances. Nolan proceeds to describe the escalation of war and documents the events of the war. He highlights the significant battles such as Sebastopol with illustrations. In the words of the publisher, J. S. Virtue, 'A faithful and graphic history of the war must prove to be one of the most desirable books in the English language...A record of these events, at once popular and complete, has scarcely yet been attempted: we purpose to offer such to the public.' The volumes contain tissue-guarded portraits of the principal commanders such as Napoleon III, Lord Raglan and Omar Pasha, plus maps and plans, and numerous tissue-guarded steel engravings of subjects such as 'Miss Nightingale and the Nurses at Scutari' and 'The Battle of Inkermann'. All eight books are heavily foxed and the bindings are dirty, stained, faded and very worn in all cases. However, the volumes are complete and this is a relatively rare, intact set.
