Observations on Italy

£75.00

Product description

Published in 1825 by William Blackwood, Edinburgh, and T Cadell, London, this is a first edition of highly collectible book, unfortunately showing its age but retaining some value because of its rarity.

John Bell (1763–1820) was a Scottish anatomist and surgeon, and also a talented artist. He was one of the few medical men to illustrate his own work. In 1816 he was injured by a fall from his horse and in the following year went to Italy for the benefit of his health. He died at Rome on 15 April 1820, and his "Observations on Italy" were published after his death.

This copy is in poor condition. No dust jacket. Boards are worn and damaged (see photographs). Endpapers, title page etc are heavily foxed and pages lightly so. The binding has been strengthened internally with tape. However, all pages and plates are present, although the view of Santa Trinita is bound on the frontispiece instead of at page 160 as in the list of plates.

This book was at one time the property of Lincoln Library and displays their bookplate - dated March 20th, 1826 - inside the front cover.

This book will be sent by courier.
