Old English Popular Music (2 vols)

£120.00

Product description

Sub title “ A new Edition with a preface and notes, and the earlier examples entirely revised by H Willis Wooldridge”. Chappell was the son of a music publisher in London. He was the first to apply academic rigour to ancient music and the present books had at least two previous manifestations, under slightly different titles, in 1838 and 1859. The latter volume “which at once became the recognised authority upon the subject". The present pair of volumes were edited by Professor Wooldridge “with the tunes re-harmonised on the basis of the mediæval modes; this edition is practically a new work.”

Chappell hardback with no DJ. These large volumes have green cloth covered boards with bevelled edges and with a gilt decoration in the centre of the front boards and gilt lettering to spine. Each has a little wear to the top and bottom of the spine cover and some corner wear, both are also foxed throughout. No internal markings and good binding. The text is both musical notation and lyrics interspersed with comment and analysis.

This is NOT the limited edition copies.

Two largish books whose delivery costs may necessitate some negotiation.
