Peeps at the Empire

£39.99

Product description

Peeps at the Empire
Published Dalton

Nearly 150 beautiful and graphic pictures from photographs illustrating life and scenery in Great Britain and her colonies. This potted history of all things colonial does not reveal its publication date but heavy reference to the late 1890's in descriptions to the photographs. Blue engraved cloth boards with gold lettering show heavy wear and discolouration, with much fraying towards base of spine. Front hinge is badly cracked but back hinge and paste down are better. Landscape format and quite heavy.

Page numbering is highly erratic - the last page is 216 (Ben Nevis) but four pages earlier we have page 196 (Dochart River) and shortly before that, page 141 (Hobart), but 152 pages counted with no evidence of missing pages. Page 126 (Ottawa) has a small interior tear, apparently acquired during the manufacturing process.

All photographs are b/w, most having dramatic (but tasteful) cloud formations painted over the original sky - altogether quite unusual. This is a curious book, rather let down by its cover and binding. A rare volume.

Oxfam Bookshop Market Harborough

Oxfam is the UK's largest second hand bookseller. Oxfam bookshops offer a wider selection of books than most shops, from modern fiction and leisure interest to more specialist subjects, classics, and rare or collectable books. We also stock an attractive range of greetings cards and a good selection of stationery. Come and browse!

Could you help us by collecting donations from donors homes? Our shop receives many offers of generous donations that we have to turn down as we do not have volunteers able to collect. We would ask you to collect in your own car, at your convenience and reimburse your petrol costs. It might be a couple of times a month and would make a really big difference to our ability to make money.
