This limited edition volume (500 copies only issued) contains 24 (mainly charcoal) portraits of well-known characters of the early 20th century, and was produced following a successful exhibition of the artist's work in May/June 1919, so that people disappointed at not acquiring one of the originals could at least enjoy the reproductions at their leisure at home. Those depicted include such names as Jacob Epstein, Bernard Shaw, G K Chesterton, Edward Elgar, Augustus John, and a variety of styles were used by the artist.
Edmond X Kapp (1890-1978) was a British portrait painter, draughtsman and caricaturist who during his career depicted many of the most famous politicians, artists and musicians of the time.
Our book shows considerable wear externally, its dark greyish paper covering stained, worn, and in places frankly damaged with some loss, exposing the boards underneath. Corners particularly are badly bumped, and top & bottom of spine worn so that the protective layer of cloth is visible. Title etc are in plain black type on the front and spine. Inside, however, apart from some grubbiness to the endpapers and little browning to the tissue guards, the book is in good condition. All tissue guards are present (one or two a little torn, or partly detached), and all 24 portraits firmly tipped-in. The book is no. 236 of a limited edition of 500, 450 of which were bound in paper boards.
