Philips' Student's Atlas of Ancient & Modern Geography

£90.00

Product description

Philips' Student's Atlas of Ancient & Modern Geography
London: George Philip and son, 1887.
New and enlarged edition with consulting index.

Front cover detached but present; spine covering absent but 11.5cm piece remains with book. Back cover still attached though badly cracked along entire length. Covers of stout brown buckram with gold crest to centre. Corners bumped.

All pages tanned and block edges all dirty and stained. The title page bears the elegant signature and address of Elizabeth Goodwin, Training College, Norwich. January 1888.
48 delightfully out-of-date maps in standard cartographic pastel colours that ooze the British colonialism of the time. Map four shows the extent of the empire, reaching into parts of Antarctica and all the other continents. Each map is preceded by a blank page upon which Miss Goodwin has neatly written the page title.
The atlas was clearly well used by an avid student: there are numerous ink notes throughout in the owner's hand that add to the appeal.

Those with a keen eye will enjoy picking out the (current) inaccuracies.

Oxfam Bookshop Market Harborough

Oxfam is the UK's largest second hand bookseller. Oxfam bookshops offer a wider selection of books than most shops, from modern fiction and leisure interest to more specialist subjects, classics, and rare or collectable books. We also stock an attractive range of greetings cards and a good selection of stationery. Come and browse!

Could you help us by collecting donations from donors homes? Our shop receives many offers of generous donations that we have to turn down as we do not have volunteers able to collect. We would ask you to collect in your own car, at your convenience and reimburse your petrol costs. It might be a couple of times a month and would make a really big difference to our ability to make money.
