S Prout Newcombe wrote a series of different little textbooks, some being designated for the family, some for infants and one an exposition on the Great Exhibition. The present trio are simply designated " A journal of Instruction for the Family and School". They are divided into weeks and each week has a lesson a day - Moral,l Botany, English Geography Arithmetic, History etc etc. Each is on two sides of a small page so they cannot have taken up more than half an hour. They are often cast in the form of a conversation or as a brief lecture.

Houlston and Stoneman hardbacks with no DJ. Undated. All of 380 pages. Green cloth covered boards with embossed pattern to front and spine and gilt lettering. There is some wear and erosion of the hinges of Vol 3. Frontispiece steel etching with transparency covering. Book plate on ffep. No other marks and good binding. Much foxing of the end papers of both volumes. Being sold as a set..

It is difficult to make out the age of child being addressed. Certainly some of the material seems pretty erudite to modern eyes.
