Practical Hints to Young Females, on the duties of a wife, a mother, and a mistress of a family.

£49.00

Product description

An absolutely fascinating little book. The modern feminist can measure here the distance her movement has come in the past 200 years. This is very much of the “love honour and obey” school and gives an intimate insight into the life and expectations of the middle class of its time. Ann Martin Taylor, married to an engraver and non-conformist minister, had herself a considerable family which attained some literary reputation.
Hardback book with half leather binding. The spine cover and adjacent binding to the front cover has much wear and some erosion of its surface. There is some wear and bumping to the edges. Marbled cloth covering the boards. Gilt lettering to spine. The hinges are a little sprung but remain entirely functional. Edges of the text block in gilt, although somewhat dulled. There is an undated dedication on the front end page. Frontispiece of mother and child; this is not attributed. No other marks. Firm binding to text block.
As this second edition followed the first after a year, and as there are several subsequent editions, we may take it that this little book found itself a market.
