Secret Service!

£9.99

Product description

Secret Service!
Norman Dale
Illustrated in monochrome by Gertrude Elias
John Lane, The Bodley Head, London, 1947; first published 1943.
Hardback; 145 x 205 mm; blue boards with titles in black on spine, and pictorial in black on front cover; 117 pages; endpapers maps. Original unclipped dust jacket.
The dust jacket is protected in a transparent cover through which it can be seen that parts of the jacket are missing though little has been lost from the front cover. However, the book itself is in good condition. The binding is sound. There is slight bumping to the ends of the spine of the book. Page ends tanned. The quality of the paper used in printing is probably due to wartime restrictions still in force but the contents are clean and unmarked.
Norman Dale wrote two suspenseful series of books for children, of which Secret Service! is the first book in one series. It was followed by Dangerous Treasure and The Best Adventure, child thrillers about Peter and Ginger who, in Secret Service!, run away to sea. Some of the interest in this book may lie in the fact that the illustrations are by Gertrude Elias (1913-1998). She was acquainted with George Orwell, and working on Secret Service! gave her the idea of a satirical cartoon film in which Nazis are portrayed as pig characters ruling a farm. She showed Orwell some of her drawings with the idea that a writer might provide a text.
