Street-lore of Bath: A Record of Changes in the Highways and Byways of the City

£50.00 Out Of Stock

Product description

Street-lore of Bath: A Record of Changes in the Highways and Byways of the City
R E M Peach
Simpkin, Marshall & Co Ltd, London; E R Blackett, Bath; 1893.
Hardback; 185 x 220 mm; leather-bound with raised bands on spine; titles in gold on black background and gold pictorials on spine; device in gold on front cover; 154 pages plus unpaginated advertisements; top edge gilt. No dust jacket. The book is kept in a brown board box with a marbled interior matching the endpapers of the rebound book.
The book is in very good condition having been rebound in the manner described above. The binding is sound. The fore and bottom edges of the pages are irregularly cut. The pages are tanned with a few finger marks and minor foxing here and there.
“The author has endeavoured to elucidate the meanings of old names, which have for the most part been preserved and enshrined either in the streets or in buildings.”
The book has much of interest in the author’s record of the history of Bath and the very detailed account he presents as well as the contemporaneous advertisements by Bath businesses. It is likely to appeal to those with an interest in this field as well as those simply with an interest in, or connection with the city of Bath. It is beautifully presented in its rebound condition.
