Swimming - Montague Holbein - 1st Edition - 1903

£50.00

Product description

'Everyone ought to know how to swim'. So begins the Preface to this idiosyncratic manual from cross-channel swimmer Montague Holbein on a skill which 'should be cultivated by all Britons, not only ... for the saving of life, but also as a means for the development of muscular strength'. The text is enlivened with line drawings of the various strokes a swimmer can adopt. Chapter headings include, as well as the standard strokes, 'Under-water swimming', 'Swimming like a dog' and 'Water tricks'. Undated. A pencil note on the first page states (1898 Edition), but it seems likely from the British Library catalogue and elsewhere that it is the first edition from 1903. Period advertisements at either end.

Hardback book in fair condition. Ends of spine and corners bumped, significant wear and discolouration to boards and spine, fraying to yellow cloth at top front to spine. Title and illustration on front board faded. Pages discoloured, with foxing and other stains. Gathering of pages 19 to 30 loose.
