Publisher: Chatto & Windus, Picadilly, London, 1888, new edition, with 174 illustrations. Hardback, 438 pages plus 32 pages of publisher's lists. 174 b&w illustrations in the text plus lovely, decorative chapter headings. Cover, in red cloth boards with gilt titling and amusing illustrations / decorations in black to spine and front, is in decent, firm condition commensurate with age with some fading / darkening to spine, bumping to spine extremities and to corners, a one inch edge tear to top of spine cover, a 2 inch tear along the top rear edge of spine cover and a few grubby shelfwear related marks here and there. Internally the book is in generally sound condition commensurate with age with tanning to pages and page block edges and foxing marks to title page, frontispiece and tissue guard and here and there throughout. Tissue guard for frontispiece is loose. Binding is generally firm but hinge is showing signs of weakening at front and rear endpapers. However, overall the book is in generally sound and tight condition. A lovely and sought-after edition of this great classic with decorative red cloth cover and many superb and humorous frontispiece and illustrations (highly typical of the book illustration style of the 1880s) in the text and beautifully decorated chapter headings.
