First edition published 1904-06 by Hodder & Stoughton in two volumes:
Book 1: The Old Testament (c. 1904). 'From the creation of the world to the death of Moses' by Rev Canon J. Dobell et al. 'The Patriarchal Age' and several other sections, ending with 'the Prophets - Isaiah to Malachi'.
Book 2: The New Testament [incorporating 'The Gospels in Art' (1904) and ' The Apostles in Art' (1906).] 'The Life of Christ by Great Painters from Fra Angelico to Holman Hunt. Text by Leonce Benedite (translated by Wilfred Sparroy) and G. Chadwick, the Bishop of Derry & Raphoe.

Hardback. Red cloth board covers with gilt lettering & decoration on front and spine. Fading on all covers, particularly along the spines. Inside pages are age-yellowed with foxing in places. Binding secure in volume 1. Frontis illustration detached in volume 2. Otherwise, both books in quite good condition.

Both volumes are profusely illustrated with black and white plates (some tissue guarded) depicting biblical scenes from paintings by great artists such as Durer and Michelangelo as well as Victorian artists who are less well-known today.

This set will be of interest to lovers of art and Bible readers alike. It shows how biblical stories were envisaged in the centuries before ours.
