L.H. Tonks, R.C.B. Jones, W Lloyd, R.H. Sherlock (eds)
HM Stationery Office, 1931. pp240 plus five page map gazette.
Strong tan boards, stained and dirty, with black HMSO titles and crest. Spine is worn, floppy and frayed, torn to top 1cm. Inner hinges badly cracked - front board is just hanging on; back board is better.
Pages all evenly tanned, foxing to page edges and some staining. The block is delicate and would not stand up to much rough treatment
Seven b/w plates describing the geology/ geography/ species to be found on the sheet, and 68 illustrations of same, including fold out species transects, geological columns, sections etc.
This book was owned by "NH" a geologist at Sutton Manor Colliery, St Helens and it carries several marginal notes in his hand.
The book is subtitled: "Memoirs of the Geological Survey England & Wales - Explanation of Sheet 8." (One of a series of geological sheet maps printed by HMSO that are a technical version of the familiar OS tourist maps). The book is a professional accompaniment to map 85 - an expanded story with all the back notes and illustrations that bring it alive for the industrial archaeologist. There is a supplementary chapter on the regional palaeontology by WB Wright.
All wonderful stuff, and made even better by knowing that the owner carried it around with him while doing his job at the colliery. Under the circumstances it has performed remarkably well to have survived intact.
The colliery is now a theme park.
