The Life of Guzman d'Alfarache; vols 1 & 2

£100.00

Product description

The Life of Guzman d'Alfarache; vols 1 & 2
London. R Bonwick and others. First edition 1707.

Written in Spanish by Mateo Aleman and done into English from the New French version and compared with the original by several hands. Adorned with sculptures by Gaspar Bouttats.

Vol 1 - pp 547. Tooled brown calf boards show the marks of time and great age; there are scuffs and marks to front and back but the corners are very good. Spine covering with five raised bands has perished and all that remains is a pretty gilt 1. The front board literally hangs by a thread. Cracking inside the block; tanning and foxing and other alien stains incurred through the centuries. Top edges brown but fading away. Other edges speckled pink - an unusual state for a book.

Engravings throughout the book by Bouttats, of Antwerp.

Vol 2 - pp 386 followed by Celestina: or, the Spanish Tragi-Comedy. pp 102.
The play is missing pp 94-99 due to a printing error.
Inner hinges are cracked but firm - much better than vol 1. Spine covering again perished. Gilt stamped with 2.
More baroque engravings by Bouttats.

A very rare pair of books.

Oxfam Bookshop Market Harborough

Oxfam is the UK's largest second hand bookseller. Oxfam bookshops offer a wider selection of books than most shops, from modern fiction and leisure interest to more specialist subjects, classics, and rare or collectable books. We also stock an attractive range of greetings cards and a good selection of stationery. Come and browse!

Could you help us by collecting donations from donors homes? Our shop receives many offers of generous donations that we have to turn down as we do not have volunteers able to collect. We would ask you to collect in your own car, at your convenience and reimburse your petrol costs. It might be a couple of times a month and would make a really big difference to our ability to make money.
