A second edition copy (published in the same year as the first "with considerable alterations") of this biography of "the intimate friend and distinguished coadjutor of Martin Luther" (1497-1560).

Full tan leather, gilt borders. Edgeworn and scuffed, boards attached only by stitching. 4-banded spine with end losses but title label intact, detached along one side. Marbled eps, ffeps almost detached, bookplate to front pastedown. Binding otherwise secure. Scattered foxing, a few pencil underlines/marginalia (ca 10 pages only) but overall internally clean and well preserved. xxiv, 581 pp + 2pp adverts at rear; portrait frontis plus foldout facsimile, both with faint offsetting to opposing page.
