The Life of the Bee was illustrated by Edward Julius Detmold, First Illustrated Detmold edition, 1911. [First published May 1901 according to the copyright page].
Full rough cut Japanese vellum, with boards elaborately stamped in gilt. Cream or white boards have a gilt decoration embossed on front and gilt title lettering. Spine is very discoloured by sunning. Back board has a bee motif embossed in the centre. Generally the boards are discoloured and bumped at extremities, with 1cm red ink front left bottom by spine. Internally very sound, bright, clean and tight; free from inscriptions.
On the whole this is a lovely copy with thirteen glorious individual page tipped-in colour plates.
The author was Maurice Maeterlinck, a Belgian playwright and poet, who was awarded the Noble Prize in Literature in 1911. A beautiful, collectable, charming book.
