The Looms of the Gods

£19.99

Product description

It is not known whether this play was ever performed - as a verse drama dealing with reincarnation it would perhaps have been difficult to stage in 1914, when the world was embarking on four years of war, though its consideration of the possibility of life after death might have seemed apposite.

John Smyth Carroll (b. 1853), originally from County Tyrone, became a minister for the Free Church of Scotland, becoming a Doctor of Divinity in 1907. His fine literary mind led him to write two books about Dante: 'Exiles of Eternity: An Exposition of Dante's Inferno' and 'Prisoners of Hope: An Exposition of Dante's Purgatorio'. John also published poetry and sermons - and evidently this one known drama.

Our copy is in generally good condition for its age, bound in blue/green cloth with gilt title and motif on the front cover and gilt titles etc (somewhat faded) on the spine. The front cover also has a double band impressed border. The edges of the cover are a little faded and the roughcut page edges are all darkened with age. All corners are bumped (but with no frank damage), and there is shelf wear to top & bottom of the spine. Internally, the binding is firm and there are no loose pages. The pages are clean and unmarked. There is some light foxing to the front and back few pages, but none in the body of the book block. A neat ink-written inscription on the front free endpaper reads 'With the author's best wishes. 21st May 1914'.
