Six volumes of Shakespeare's plays in large, clear print format dating from 1807. A very scarce edition of The Plays of William Shakespeare from the Corrected Text of Samuel Johnson and George Steevens. Embellished with twenty two plates. The Plays of William Shakespeare was an 18th-century edition of the dramatic works of William Shakespeare, edited by Samuel Johnson and George Steevens.
Volume I contains: A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Taming of the Shrew, The Merry Wives of Windsor, Much ado About Nothing, All's Well that Ends Well, and Measure for Measure. With an engraved plate to frontispiece and three further plates to front section.
Volume II contains: A Winter's tale. Two gentlemen of Verona. Hamlet. Romeo and Juliet. Richard II. Richard III. With an engraved plate to frontispiece and three further plates to front section.
Volume III contains: A Comedy of Errors, Macbeth, Henry VI, Pt I-III. , and As You Like It. With an engraved plate to frontispiece and three further plates to front section.
Volume IV contains: The Tempest, Twelfth Night, Henry VIII, Julius Caesar, Timon of Athens, and Coriolanus. With an engraved plate to frontispiece and three further plates to front section.
Volume V contains: Love's labour's Lost, King John, King Lear, Troilus and Cressida, Titus Andronicus, and Othello. With an engraved plate to frontispiece and three further plates to front section.
Volume VI contains: The Merchant of Venice, Henry IV, Pt. I-II. , Henry V, Antony and Cleopatra, Cymbeline and Pericles. With an engraved plate to frontispiece and one further plate to front section.
Samuel Johnson (1709 - 1784), often referred to as Dr Johnson, was an English writer who made lasting contributions to English literature as a poet, essayist, moralist, literary critic, biographer, editor and lexicographer. George Steevens (1736 - 1800) was an English Shakespearean commentator.
The illustrations were painted by J Stothard RA and then engraved by J Heath, engraver to King George III and the Prince Regent.

Condition - All six volumes are bound with black cloth spines and corners and green paper boards, plain cream heavy paper end papers and the page edges are marbled but very faded. The pages inside are remarkably clean for its age with minimal age spotting. All the volumes are embossed near the front with 'West Cornwall School, Penzance, tel. PZ 463', and look as if they were donated to the school by a Mrs Britton in memory of Canon Britton in 1948. All show wear to the spines and corners and show some marks and scuffing to the green paper. Volumes 2 and 4 have a library label on the spine along with glue residue. Volume 5 has three areas of damage to the surface of the green paper on the front.
