The Poetical Works of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Household edition
Houghton, Mifflin and Company, Boston & New York, 1886.
Hardback; 135 x 205 mm; half leather marbled boards with titles in gold on leather on spine with a raised band; xviii & 492 pages, all edges marbled; marbled endpapers. No dust jacket. Twelve monochrome illustrations; frontispiece with tissue guard.
The book is in fair condition. Scuffing and some wear to the covers, particularly the spine which is very worn with a little damage to the top. The binding is generally sound except internally the front cover and its spine have come away exposing the backstrip. Dedication written in black ink on the recto of the front fly leaf: “Carrie from her affectionate Brother Frank. New York April 30/90”. Some tanning and foxing, and a few marks and dog ears here and there. At page 179 some lines of poetry written in pencil on a piece of paper attached to the page by a small piece of sellotape that has discoloured.
The poems of Longfellow (1807-1882) are well known. This edition includes translations, and notes to accompany the poems.
