The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists

£100.00

Product description

The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists
Grant Richards Ltd. 1918. 2nd edition.

Tired red boards devoid of jacket, now fading to brown, especially to spine. Boards are good with corners a bit knocked; tears to hinge surfaces that have exposed the binding within. Boards are rather loose. The book is clearly a frail thing but still very much intact.
Owner signed in pencil to both endpapers (W Bartholomew, 3/9/18) two months before the end of the Great War.
Every page is tanned, especially around the peripheries. Small blue ink stain to block edge.

Author died without the book reaching publication and the task instead fell to his daughter, who finally succeeded in 1914 after a difficult passage through the hoops.

Very rare edition of this classic piece of literature.

Wonder how this unique item ended up online?

Most of the second-hand items you see online have been donated, by supporters like you, to our high street stores. Each item is then priced, photographed and listed on this site by our amazing team of volunteers from across the country.

After you have bought your item, our team of volunteers package and dispatch it from the Shop straight to you or your chosen recipient.

All profits from the sales of our goods go towards funding Oxfam's work around the world. We rely on your donations to sell online so please keep the cycle of goodness going!

Oxfam Bookshop Market Harborough

Oxfam is the UK's largest second hand bookseller. Oxfam bookshops offer a wider selection of books than most shops, from modern fiction and leisure interest to more specialist subjects, classics, and rare or collectable books. We also stock an attractive range of greetings cards and a good selection of stationery. Come and browse!

Could you help us by collecting donations from donors homes? Our shop receives many offers of generous donations that we have to turn down as we do not have volunteers able to collect. We would ask you to collect in your own car, at your convenience and reimburse your petrol costs. It might be a couple of times a month and would make a really big difference to our ability to make money.
