The Red Republican & The Friend of the People 1850-1851 [Two Volumes, 1966]

£39.99

Product description

A facsimilie reprint of the Chartist journal with introduction by John Saville. Two volumes, published in 1966 by Merlin Press.

A complete facsimile reprint of one of the most significant of the Chartist journals. The Red Republican which appeared from June 22 to November 23 1850, and The Friend of the People from December 7 1850 to July 26 1851, together they form one journal, despite the short interval between them and the change of name.

The paper was founded in 1850 by George Julian Harney, after he was forced to resign from editing the Northern Star by its owner, Feargus O'Connor, who disagreed with his socialism.
Harney tried to use the paper to educate the working classes about socialism and proletarian internationalism, and advocated socialism within the trade union movement. The Red Republican published the first English translation of the Communist Manifesto in 1850,

In his introduction Dr Saville gives a full history of the journal and explains its role in the English and European radical and socialist movement.

Complete with dust jackets which have not been price-clipped, they do have some wear and few tears on the extremities as well as being a bit discoloured. The boards are bright, unworn and generally clean, with some light foxing. Internally clean and unmarked with sound bindings.
