The Star Born

£40.00

Product description

The Star-born is a book about good and evil, about what we are doing here on earth and why, contained within the more obvious context of the second coming of a Christ figure – the ‘Khristos’ factor – to earth. The whole book is mystical and visionary. Henry Williamson uses the concept of stars (an important theme in much of his work) and one born from the stars – from ‘Beyond’ – within which to present his ideas. The story, a 'celestial fantasy', is set in the real world at Lydford in Devon, on the edge of Dartmoor, and its gorge and castle keep. The descriptions of the scenery and natural world are superb, but there is the added dimension of another world – a Spirit world – inhabited by the Wind, Water and Air Spirits with ‘Quill’ the archetypal bird spirit. The book is enhanced through the numerous beautiful wood engravings by CF Tunnicliffe. This is the first edition, the cheap edition without the vellum end-papers and gilt top edge, but is otherwise the same. Th book condition is fair. The dust jacket is complete but shows signs of wear and tear, the cloth boards are good and the spine is in good condition. The pages are good, with some foxing, but largely clean and crisp commensurate with age. The wood engravings are in lovely condition. Has previous owner's book plate on the title page.

Oxfam Bookshop Shaftesbury

Our Oxfam bookshop in Shaftesbury is situated at the top of one of Britain's loveliest hills. Gold Hill affords a magical view across the Blackmore Vale and the bookshop lies between it and the old Abbey grounds which date back to 888AD. We can't claim to have manuscripts of that antiquity but we do have an extensive selection of beautiful books from our large children's section through fiction, biography, poetry, classic literature and humour to a fine collection of works on art, sport, cooking and gardening. In addition to this comprehensive and exciting array of books we also carry a large and varied stock of vinyl albums and singles both old and new and a fine stock of classical and popular CDs and DVDs. Our lovely selection of cards for all occasions is also very popular. Staffed predominantly by volunteers we're a friendly and helpful bunch and look forward to seeing even more interested music and book fans soon!
