The Techniques of Violin Playing, on Joachim's Method

£55.00

Product description

William Reeves, First edition 1880. pp69.

Stiff blue card, quarter bound to spine. The covers are becoming dirty after 130 years but have done very well: there is moderate wear to the corners and the spine binding is torn near the ends. Line illustration on front shows the correct way to hold a violin bow. There is a glittering acolade printed on the front by Joachim himself, stating that in his opinion "the book will offer material aid to all violin players." Joachim was a famous violinist who was well connected with the European composers of the time.

Inner binding is starting to fail and the front board is only held in place along the bottom half. The pages themselves are still very good, mildly tanned and firmly bound inside the sections. however the sections themselves are failing in several places, making this a very delicate book.

The book has clearly been used by a musician in her practical studies: there are some light pencil marks in the margins.
At the back are some exercises for students and a grand appendix extending over seven pages. Then there is an advertisement for another violin title, "How to play the Fiddle", again with a profound comment by the great Joseph Joachim. And finally there is a two page publisher's gazette.

The book was translated from the Hungarian by an American publisher HE Krebiel at the tender age of 26.

There are numerous books in print on how to play the violin but this is the one you need to buy having stood such a test of time. Published price "Half a crown" which is 12.5 pence today but now worth considerably more due to its provenance outlined above.

Oxfam Bookshop Market Harborough

Oxfam is the UK's largest second hand bookseller. Oxfam bookshops offer a wider selection of books than most shops, from modern fiction and leisure interest to more specialist subjects, classics, and rare or collectable books. We also stock an attractive range of greetings cards and a good selection of stationery. Come and browse!

Could you help us by collecting donations from donors homes? Our shop receives many offers of generous donations that we have to turn down as we do not have volunteers able to collect. We would ask you to collect in your own car, at your convenience and reimburse your petrol costs. It might be a couple of times a month and would make a really big difference to our ability to make money.
