Product description

The Wind Fairies
Elizabeth Brennan
Illustrated by Naomi Heather
Metropolitan Publishing Company Limited, Dublin & London; nd; ca 1946.
Hardback; 190 x 250 mm; light grey boards with cloth spine; titles in blue on spine, and on front cover with additional pictorials of fairies; 86 pages. Original clipped dust jacket. Fifty-two pen sketches in monochrome plus 8 colour plates.
The book is in fair condition. The binding is sound though the book is cocked. The dust jacket is grubby and tanned with some open and closed tears though no text has been lost, and the colour illustration on the front of the jacket is complete. The jacket is tanned and foxed internally. The covers of the book are a little grubby, particularly the spine, with some bumping and a stain at the bottom of the front cover. Page ends tanned, and some tanning and foxing internally. The recto of the front free endpaper is annotated in blue ink “Christmas 1946 To Margaret from Veronica & John “.
“The Wind Fairies brings something new into the world of the ‘little people’. In its many stories and verses, the reader will learn of the fairies who control the different winds and read of the deeds of the kind North, South and West Wind Fairies and of their efforts to defeat the wicked schemings of the bad East Wind ones, who love to make mischief. Elizabeth Brennan shows a particular aptitude in writing for children and her stories and verse, full of fancy and gentle humour, will be read with delight by children of all ages. Naomi Heather’s illustrations…give the book a charm and wistfulness that make it one which children will treasure.”
