The Works of the Honourable Sir Philip Sidney, In Prose and Verse - including Pembroke's Arcadia (3 Volumes)

£300.00

Product description

Full title "The Works of the Honourable Sir Philip Sidney, In Prose and Verse, In Three Volumes. Containing I. The Countess of Pembroke's Arcadia, II. The Defence of Poesy, III. Astrophel and Stella, IV. The Remedy of Love, Sonnets etc, V. The Lady of May. A Masque, VI. The Life of the Author. The Fifteenth Edition".

Fifteenth Edition (New Arcadia), published 1739. Dublin: printed by S. Powell, for T. Moore. From the library of Reverend John Alcock.

3 volumes containing 6 works. "The Countess of Pembroke's Arcadia", also known simply as the Arcadia, is a long prose work by Sir Philip Sidney written towards the end of the 16th century. The version of the Arcadia known to the Renaissance and later periods is substantially longer than the Old Arcadia. Narrated in sprawling Renaissance prose, the romance comprises five "books or acts," organised according to the five-part structure of classical dramaturgy: exposition, action, complication, reversal, catastrophe. "The Defence of Poesy" (or "An Apology for Poetry") is an essay that integrates a number of classical and Italian precepts on fiction. "Astrophel and Stella" is a sonnet sequence containing 108 sonnets and 11 songs. "The Lady of May" is one of Sidney's lesser-known works, a masque written and performed for Queen Elizabeth in 1578 or 1579. The first volume contains a short autobiography of the author.

Volume 1 condition: No dust jacket. Brown leather boards, very worn. Cover is starting to loosen. Large crack down spine. Pages are very aged but all intact and readable. Several ink inscriptions from various dates. Library crest on inside cover.

Volume 2 condition: No dust jacket. Brown leather boards, very worn. Cover starting to loosen. Pages are very aged but all intact and readable. Library crest on inside cover. Small woodworm holes at front.

Volume 3 condition: No dust jacket. Brown leather boards, very worn. Front cover somewhat warped. Back cover starting to loosen. Pages are very aged but all intact and readable. Pages stiff towards back. Library crest on inside cover.

Overall these are fragile but readable copies. Very worn as expected of age but interesting historical artefacts.
