Product description

Told Again

Traditional tales told by

Walter de la Mare

With illustrations by A H Watson

Basil Blackwell, Oxford: first printed and reprinted October 1927; reprinted September 1935.

Hardback; 150 x 205 mm; blue boards with gold titles on spine and front cover with a pictorial of Rapunzel; viii & 320 pages. No dust jacket.

The book is in fair condition. The binding is sound though the book is slightly cocked. The covers are a little grubby, and the spine is especially discoloured with fading of the titles. Page end tanning and a little tanning internally. The front paste-down endpaper has a school prize label. Erased markings on the contents page. Pencil marking and alterations in the story “The Turnip”.

“Told Again was compiled by Walter de la Mare, and contains illustrations by A H Watson. It is a wonderful collection of 19 traditional fairy tales, including favourites such as ‘Little Red Riding Hood’, ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’, ‘Bluebeard’, ‘Sleeping Beauty’, ‘Rumpelstiltskin’ and ‘Snow-White.’ Walter de la Mare (1873 – 1956) was an English poet, short story writer and novelist, best remembered for his works for children, and his poem ‘The Listeners.’ He composed many short-story collections, though folkloric tales were a particular fascination. This edition of Old Tales is accompanied by the drawings of Alice Helena Watson (1896 – 1984); a graceful and unique illustrator. Watson largely focused on children’s and nursery tales, but also provided illustrations for dust jackets, magazines, and other one-off pieces. Her sinuous black-and white illustrations further refine and enhance the carefully collated stories of De La Mare – making this a book to delight both young and old alike.”
