Tom Brown's School Days [circa 1900s]

£17.99

Product description

Published by Collins' Clear-Type Press, undated likely around 1900s.
First published in 1857. Multiple full page, captioned illustrations printed on glossy paper by Harold Copping. Illustrated end papers. Illustrated, two-tone boards and spine. 2 pages of advertisements at the back of book.

Thomas Hughes' classic schoolboy novel follows the adventures of Tom Brown as he leaves his home in the Vale of the White Horse, Berkshire, and begins life at Rugby School in the 1830's. Tom's time at Rugby starts well, but he begins to find himself in many scrapes and difficulties with the school bully - Flashman, the masters, local landowners and the other pupils. He finally appears before the man Tom fears most, the headmaster Dr Arnold. Dr Arnold is faced with whether or not to expel Tom from the school, and if not how to stop Tom's downward spiral.

Thomas Hughes (1822-1896), was a student at Rugby School and wrote this classic work in the mid-1800's. Hughes later went on to write a sequel (Tom Brown at Oxford), and also became a Member of Parliament. Dr Thomas Arnold is the only person in the novel who is a true historical figure, the other characters, Hughes said later, were composites of boys whom he knew at school.

in fair condition, this book was most likely a child's own reading copy. Inscription on the backside of the front end-paper reading 'To Ella, From'. Bumped corners, significant edge wear and shelf wear to both boards. Spine has some very severe wear on the top due to being pulled out of a shelf multiple times. Front board has a few light scratches and the back board has some noticeable stains. Despite the binding being faded, the illustration, title and authors name are all clear. Some foxing stains on pages throughout the book and minor foxing on the edges of pages. Loose binding and pages beginning to comer away from the binding at the front, however they are still attached and unlikely to fall off unless handled heavily. Pages are clear and readable.
