Town Life in the XIV Century as seen in the Court Rolls of Winchester City

£19.99

Product description

Town Life in the XIV Century as seen in the Court Rolls of Winchester City
J S F(urley)
Warren and Son Limited, The Wykeham Press, Winchester; nd but pre 1971 (1947?).
Hardback; 155 x 230 mm; dark blue boards with gold titles on spine and front cover; 163 pages. Original unclipped dust jacket.
The book is in good condition. The binding is sound but the book is very slightly cocked. The dust jacket is taller than the book so the top is creased and chipped as is the bottom of the spine of the jacket. There is a degree of grubbiness of the jacket, particularly the spine. The bottom of the spine of the book is bumped and discoloured. Page ends foxed and unevenly cut.
After an explanatory text, the extracts from the rolls are presented on the verso in Latin with the English translation facing it on the recto of the next leaf. This is essentially an academic work rather than being aimed at a general readership. That said, the picture it paints of custom and law, and daily life in Winchester in the 14th century may be of wider interest.
