The third edition, published in 1711, of the 300 year old geography text book by Edward Wells and students of Christ Church, printed for William Churchill at the Black Swan in Pater-Noster-Row. A slim leather bound volume lacking front free end paper, printed with 'a sett of maps', now missing. Remains of a previous owner's label on front fixed end paper and faded signature 'E Whitley' on title page. Back end paper has pencilled triangulation (?) calculations. Front and rear covers decorated with simple gilt embossed square; spine with five raised bands, faded gilt panels and lettering. Text throughout is fascinating, concluding with methods for reckoning latitude and longitude and a comprehensive index of place names, many of which are unfamiliar.
