Product description

A set of five small volumes with entirely French text. The book was originally published in 1798 and purported to be a “a manuscript found in Herculanum”. Lantier was initially credited as the translator. It is a fantasy travelogue, with wildly anachronistic historical personages allegedly meeting. Nevertheless it clearly struck a chord and several editions were published over the years following its launch. This particular edition is prepared for young persons by Madam Wauthier.
Didier and Tebett five volume leather bound small books. Gilt border to boards and worn gild decoration to spine cover. Each has a frontispiece engraving. Published in London in 1808. Marbled end papers. Place holder ribbon.
Vol 1. has a fold out map at the front; it is in good condition. pp 215. Some wear to the outside of the front hinge
Vol 2. has owner’s name dated 1813 on ffep., pp215
Vol 3. Owner’s name on fffep. pp219
Vol 4. Owner’s name on ffep dated 1814. Quite severe foxing of first 70 pages pp 215.
Vol 5. Owner’s name on ffep dated 1813 pp 219.
