Wilfrid Israel

£90.00

Product description

This little book is a collection of warm tributes to the man described, from people as varied as the Bishop of Chichester, and Albert Einstein. There are also some pieces by Wilfrid Israel himself, offering an insight into his mind and thinking.

Wilfrid Israel (1899-1943) was a man doing his utmost to help his fellow Jews during WWII, by travelling on behalf of The Jewish Agency for Palestine to the Iberian Peninsula, to explore and (hopefully) arrange for the speedy transfer of Jewish refugees, mostly children, to Palestine. He accomplished this task successfully, and then, refusing a rest period in London, was on his way back to Spain in an unarmed passenger plane which was attacked and shot down by Nazi planes in the Bay of Biscay, with the loss of 17 lives - the first recorded attack on a non-combatant aircraft.

The book itself is only 50 pages long, bound in blue cloth with a silver publisher's initial 'M' on the front cover. It is otherwise anonymous to the casual viewer. The exterior shows some signs of shelf wear in the usual places but is in generally good condition. Within, the binding is firm, and all pages clean but lightly browned. A frontispiece photograph of Wilfrid Israel himself is just still affixed to the half-title page opposite the title page. A little piece of history produced, as the introduction says, to: 'encourage us to intensify our efforts and to continue our work for rescue and reconstruction ... '.
